Don't Trust Your Fat Friends?
why you should absolutely curate your algorithm and protect your peace
Some years ago a Christian mommy blogger went viral for posting a picture of herself in a bikini. She was post-baby, thin, and had a stretch mark (gasp!) and this qualified her to be crowned the internet’s bravest woman alive. Gross.
In one of her books, which I assume was about hygiene based on the title, she told her readers that they shouldn’t trust their fat friends.
Why? Because obviously their goal was to lose weight (fat people should always try to be thin, don’t you know!?) and they weren’t able to follow through on whatever diet they told you about. Thus they are not trustworthy friends who will be there for you.
These were ACTUAL words she wrote on a page, sent through multiple rounds of editing and GOT PUBLISHED. It’s been years since I heard about this, saw for myself and I still can’t get over it. The idea that I am not a trustworthy friend because I’m fat? Ludicrous. Us fatties are probably the best at keeping your secrets because we’re too busy putting french fries in our mouths to run them behind your skinny a$$ back.
She was the first of many Christian mommy fat-phobic influencers I’ve blocked on social media because I don’t trust myself not to get wild in the comment section of their latest nonsense. And trust me, there. has. been. a lot.
I love myself and my sanity enough to keep that stuff out of my feed - and so should you. Use that block button early and often and don’t absorb content/words/etc that devalue your personhood.
Your peace and well-being matter.
