While I know yesterday came as a shock to a lot of people- I was not surprised by what happened. There was a temptation to say, “how is this happening here?” but then I remember two things:
- We elected a complete narcissist who has incited violence since his first campaign.
- The US has white supremacy running through its veins. If the people there had been Black or Indigenous they would be dead. At the very least- they would not have breached the barricade.
I’m not going to dive into the list of all the tweets and statements he’s made but there are plenty of people who’ve tracked those. Also, I’m not qualified to be a racism history teacher or anti-racism leader. There are so many people of color who are teaching history and sharing their experience, I highly recommend following and subscribing to them with paid subscriptions. (don’t know where to start? I’ll gladly send you a list)
Here is what I do feel qualified to say: I don’t know what America is supposed to be- but I know what the Church should be and this ain’t it.
I have read comments from people who claim the title “Christian” who are either excusing or celebrating or denying the facts of what happened yesterday. People saying that this is what those “libtards” or “dumbocrats” get for messing with the “true patriots.” Saying that it was not Trump supporters- but Antifa- who did those things. Praising the president for all he did to stop the violence. Still claiming the election was stolen.
They are obviously confused about who they should follow to the ends of the earth.
Hint: it’s Jesus.
People are telling you exactly who they are today – pay attention.
